Hydrometallurgical process for the production of copper cathodes which uses acidic solutions to achieve the dissolution of copper compounds which are normally applied to oxidized minerals. While for this process both in dynamic piles and in permanent piles (dumps and low-grade sulphides) it is necessary to carry out the activities of assembly, dismantling and maintenance of the irrigation systems.

In the case of dynamic piles, it is also necessary to install drainage systems on the ground, to conduct the solutions. As well as the cleaning and maintenance of the solution reception gutters. Based on all of the above, the work carried out in this area is as follows:

  • Installation and removal of the battery irrigation system.

Operational continuity in Electrowinning and Electrorefining warehouses

It corresponds to the last process of sulfide minerals, in this process the electrorefined copper cathode is obtained by applying a direct electric current to an electrolytic cell, inside which the impure copper anode is dissolved, later it is selectively deposited on the cathode (white). In order to make such a process effective, it is essential to perform the cathodic inspection work to achieve the cathodic quality and efficiency parameters. The activities to be carried out for this are:

  • Checking cell streams.
  • Regulation and control of the electrolyte level.
  • Cathodic quality reportability.
  • Obtain a daily electrolyte sample.
  • Temperature and voltage measurement.
  • Reporting.
  • Control of operating variables (short circuits, insulation of electrodes, contacts, etc.).

In addition, ship process control activities are carried out, highlighting the following:

Electrowinning ship

It corresponds to the last process of oxidation of minerals, this process consists in reducing the aqueous copper dissolved in the electrolyte on a stainless steel cathode. By electrolysis the copper ions present in the solution of copper sulphate are attracted by the negative charge from the cathode and settle on it. As can be seen, the process is similar to that of electrorefining, so the tasks mentioned above are very similar.

Inspection and preparation of copper cathodes for final shipment

Once the electrorefining or electrowinning plant processes are completed, the work of handling the cathodes in the yard is carried out efficiently, essential tasks to carry out an adequate conformation of the copper bundles in terms of weight, copper quality, d labeling and classification to ensure end customer satisfaction. To achieve the aforementioned parameters, the following cycle of tasks is carried out:

  • Operation with electric forklifts for all copper package transfers.
  • Classification of copper qualities using a high resolution camera (Grade A, STD and Rejection).
  • Sampling of production batches.
  • Reassembled copper case.
  • Copper wash.
  • Strapping of copper parcels.
